Ceramic Artist

I was first introduced to working with clay in my college years and remember feeling such passion for the medium. If anyone was looking for me they knew I could be found in the ceramics studio. I ended up pursuing a career in the film industry for over ten years and realized later in my life that it was through working with clay that I felt most at home.

I am soon approaching my tenth year of working professionally in the ceramic world and see many more years of research and development ahead of me.

Over the years I have become known as the “turtle lady” since I embarked on a theme of creating clay replicas of all seven types of sea turtles. I started making them out of personal interest and became more and more fascinated in sea turtles as a subject as my research went further and further. My research started out on a rather scientific level; meeting with sea turtle specialists, visiting oceanographic institutes, spending time in many libraries etc. This research lead to more political and spiritual awareness making my work with clay all the more meaningful for me.

My ceramic glazing and firing techniques have evolved significantly and I am presently exploring raku and wood-firing since the process makes each piece very unique. These firing techniques also require me to work in a country setting fulfilling my love for nature. I am now expanding my hand-building ventures to include relief murals of many sizes. Throwing pieces at my wheel is a completely different creative process which brings me as much joy as sculpting. I enjoy making functional pieces and like to have fun with my forms and colour choices and love the endless possibilities of exploring with clay on the wheel. For me, the rhythm of throwing, provides a wonderful contrast to that of sculpting.
